It seems like these days there is no common pathway. There are drivers from Formula 1 and Indycars on the track with off road racers and late model drivers. For a few years, many drivers came from the Nascar Modifieds, ASA contributed several drivers like Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin. Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and others moved up from dirt sprint cars. The Cup roster includes drivers from all kinds of diverse backgrounds.
Some of the most common starting steps are these:

- Quarter midgets/Go karts

- Bandoleros

- Legends

- Baby Grands

- Local Stock car racing series (Late Models)

Then they go pro and race in series like the USAR Hooters Pro Cup, ASA, ARCA and/or NASCAR Camping World Series.

But it varies from one driver to another. There are some who start racing sprint cars on dirt tracks and then make the move to stock cars. Some race Modifieds. Some of them even start driving open-wheel (Tony Stewart) or sports cars (Boris Said), and even off-road (Jimmie Johnson).

Then they go to the Craftsman Truck and/or the Nationwide Series before making it to the Sprint Cup.
Usually, they start out at the local race tracks. Then they work their way up to late models/sprint cars/ASA/and many other racing leagues. But not all drivers follow that path. Some drivers, like Robby Gordon, raced in the IRL. And Jimmie Johnson started out racing dirt bikes. Each driver has their own unique way of getting to NASCAR. But for the most part, their pathway starts out by racing at local race tracks.
Local dirt track is supposedly the starting line... but Jimmie Johnson started out racing dirt bikes! I guess any form of racing can make it happen.
